Remaining years at every age

Life Expectancy by Age

Your life expectancy goes up as you get older, because you have already survived the years that pull the average down. A healthy 40-year-old man in the United States can expect about 41 more years, to around 81. At 70, he can expect about 16 more years, to around 86. The tables below show every 5-year age for five places.

Tables assume a healthy BMI and no smoking. For a figure with your own answers, use the death clock calculator or the age at death calculator.

Why does life expectancy rise with age?

Life expectancy at birth is an average over everyone born, including those who die as babies, children or young adults. Once you pass an age, those early risks are behind you. So the expected age at death for people your age is always a bit higher than the at-birth figure, and the gap grows as you get older. Demographers call this survivorship.

The world rows use the UN’s 2023 world estimates of 70.6 years for men and 75.9 for women at birth.

How were these tables made?

We built a survival curve for each country and sex with the Gompertz-Makeham formula and tuned it so its life expectancy at birth matches the UN World Population Prospects 2024 figure for 2023. Then, for each age, we worked out the average years remaining for people who have reached that age. Our method page explains each step.

These are model figures. They are close to official life tables for adults in most countries, but official national tables will differ a little, especially at very young and very old ages. In countries where many children die young, the model can look slightly pessimistic for healthy adults.

Frequently asked questions

What is my life expectancy at my age?

Find your age in the tables on this page for a quick answer, or use the calculator for your own figure. Your remaining life expectancy depends on age, sex and country, and on habits like smoking and BMI.

How many years do I have left at 50?

In our model, a healthy 50-year-old in the United States has about 32 more years if male and about 35 if female. In the UK it is a little more, and in India and Pakistan a little less. See the tables for each age.

Why is life expectancy higher for older people?

Because they have already survived the risks of earlier ages. Life expectancy at birth includes people who die young, so the average for people who reach 60 or 70 is always higher.

What is the life expectancy of a 70-year-old?

In our model, a healthy 70-year-old man in the United States can expect about 16 more years, to around 86. A woman can expect about 18 more years. The exact figure depends on health and habits.
